LinkedIn is a valuable tool for job seekers in the tech industry as it allows you to connect with industry professionals, showcase your skills and experience, see how you can leverage it to help you.

Before you begin

It's recommended you know what role(s) you are applying for before you begin creating your resume. This is super helpful when you have an understanding of what is the requirements for the role. Don't know when role(s) you want to apply for? Check out our roles page to get a better idea of what roles are in tech.

Where to start?

You will need a resume template, Dont have one? we have a sample template you can download below

resume template.png

Description: Word doc formatted in a resume template with example provided to get familiar what is typically on a resume. Note: You will need to edit to reflect your personal experience.

To kickstart this process, we propose a this approach to list your accomplishments. Start by choosing a getting a doc opened or a notepad. Write your past professional titles.

For each role, allocate space for up to 5 bullet points to jot down your major achievements.

for example:

Customer Service Representative 2020 - 2022

  • Achievement 1

  • Achievement 2

  • Achievement 3 etc...

Next, think about the successes/impact/business process improvements/project contributions you had in every role.e.g.

  • Did you change a business process?

  • Did you lead an initiative?

  • Did you do anything that aligns with the role you are applying for?

From the roster of 5 bullet points per role, cherry-pick the top 4 most influential achievements to highlight in your resume. Next, let make sure each one of them "paints the picture" of your impact.

Make every bullet count

We often spot a sneaky mistake when we check out resumes - many forget to show the 'wow' effect of what they did. Rather than just saying "I did this," it's super important to jazz up your past roles with real-life examples and victories.

Take a look at this:

"Handled X to ensure quality assurance."

This line barely shows off what you really achieved. To truly shine, use the awesome X-Y-Z rule. This rule is like your resume's secret sauce, adding zing to each point.

Introducing the X-Y-Z Formula: This clever trick is all about taking your job wins and making them sparkle on your resume. It's a neat little guide to help you talk up your wins in a way that future bosses can't resist.

Here's what it means:

X: The tricky thing you came across

Y: What you did to tackle it

Z: The cool stuff that happened because of your actions

With the X-Y-Z formula, your resume becomes a real page-turner, showing off your knack for solving problems and the great stuff that came from your hard work. It helps you put your wins in the spotlight so hiring managers can easily see and love them.

For instance, instead of simply saying you "managed a team," with the X-Y-Z magic, you could say: "Led a superhero team of 10 (X) to smooth out the sales process (Y), and boom! We boosted revenue by 15% (Z)." This paints a clear and colorful picture of the challenge, your action, and the great result of your effort.

Leverage AI to help you

If you haven't used Open AI's Chat GPT this is a great opportunity to get familiar with it. ChatGPT is an AI-powered conversational agent designed to interact with users through natural language, providing helpful and informative responses. you will need an account, click the button below to get one.

Once you're logged in, copy and paste the prompt below. A prompt is telling what you want Chat GPT to do. In this case we want it to help us create the bullet points in the resume.

Act as my assistant writing my resume ask questions to understand what to put for each title ive held and use the x y z formula for each bullet point.

Chat GPT will begin asking your questions to help write out your bullet points, if you don't follow the X Y Z formula it will try to help you get to the X Y Z format.

Conversation above was generated with OpenAI's ChatGPT.

More examples of X Y Z?

Before:"Worked as a Fast Food Worker."

After: "Identified customer dissatisfaction due to long wait times during peak hours (X), suggested and helped enforce a new fast-track ordering system (Y), reducing average customer wait time by 15% (Z)."

Before: "Worked as a Retail Sales Associate."

After: "Discovered that certain high-demand items frequently ran out of stock (X), proposed and implemented a proactive restocking plan (Y), resulting in a 35% decrease in customer complaints about item unavailability (Z)."

Before: "Worked as a Marketing Intern."

After: "As a Marketing Intern, I spotted that our social media engagement was less than ideal (X). I suggested and helped execute a content strategy that better catered to our target demographic (Y), resulting in a 25% increase in follower engagement over three months (Z)."
